The Lies We Believe
The Lies We Believe: History Always Repeats Itself
November 25, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
The fact of the matter is that history often does repeat itself on both the macro and micro level of human existence. But the wonderful news of the Gospel is that we can be break the patterns of multi-generational sin, and begin a new journey on a new road of wholeness in Christ.

The Lies We Believe: I Must Have Everyone's Love and Approval
November 18, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
While the approval of others is a driving force for most human beings, and often leads to much good, an unqualified search for favor can lead to unhealthy patterns of codependence, manipulation, and unhealthy boundaries with those around us.

If God Hates Sin, Then He Must Hate Me When I Sin
October 28, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
Many people - believers included - labor under the illusion that they must earn God's favor. The mystery of the Gospel is while God does indeed eternally hate sin, He eternally loves us as His children. God is the ultimate proof that it is possible to hate the sin and love the sinner. That is indeed why Christ died.

Life Should Be Fair
October 21, 2007 • Pastor Greg Coates
Even King David railed at the seeming inequities of life, or as Billy Joel put it - that only the good die young. Every child is born with an innate sense of justice, and life soon provides reality dissonance with that belief. But fear not - God is the one who will have the final word.

People are Basically Good
October 14, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
Paul pulls a compilation of the OT texts together to remind the Roman believers that all of us - Jew and Gentile alike - are subject to the sway of sin. If people are basically good (in an ethical sense) then how do we explain the newspaper on any given day, or the fact that I have never met a perfect person?

If it Takes Work, We Must Not Be Right For Each Other
October 7, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
The metaphor of God and his people as Bridegroom and Bride is a wonderful reminder that such relationships are filled with challenges, and we should not be surprised when tensions arise. The reason we make a covenant is not because marriage will always be a piece of cake, but precisely because it takes work.

Everything is Black and White
September 30, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
The story of Rabab is a marvelous example of how we don't always have the chose between "the right" and "the wrong" decision in a fallen world - sometimes we only we only get to pick between the lesser of two evils. Often the choices in life are black and white, but not always.

Good Christians Never Feel Angry, Anxious, or Depressed
September 16, 2007 • Pastor John Martz
Somewhere along the line many believers pick up the notion that once we come to Christ, we should no longer struggle with some of the negative emotions that are common to humanity. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Jesus himself experienced the whole range of emotions - anger, frustration, grief, etc. Becoming a Christian doesn't mean removing our "emotion chip" - it means rather that we have a bigger picture that puts those emotions in a redemptive perspective.
